How to choose a body shop: eight questions to ask any shop, including us

You don't need to know anything about cars to pick a good shop. You need the answers to eight questions, in writing where it matters. Here they are, with what a good answer sounds like.

1. Can I have the estimate in writing before you start?

Good answer: yes, itemized, with parts and labor listed, before any work. Bad answer: 'we'll know once we get into it.' Every shop finds hidden damage sometimes; that's what a supplement is for. But the starting number belongs on paper.

2. Which parts are going on my car: new OEM, recycled OEM, or aftermarket?

Good answer: it depends on the repair level you choose, and here is each line. Bad answer: 'whatever the insurance pays for.' Aftermarket and recycled parts are legitimate when they're disclosed and priced accordingly. Undisclosed is the problem.

3. Who do I talk to if something goes wrong?

Good answer: a name and a direct number. At an owner-run shop it's the owner. At a chain it may be a service advisor who wasn't there when the estimate was written and won't be there when you pick up.

4. What happens when the adjuster's number is lower than yours?

Good answer: we document the difference with photos and submit a supplement; the insurer pays it; you don't get in the middle. Bad answer: 'you'd owe the difference,' which on a covered repair to a documented estimate is simply not how it works.

5. What's the warranty, and can I have it in writing?

Good answer: here it is, it covers workmanship and paint for this long, and here's what it doesn't cover. Any shop that won't put the warranty on paper is telling you something.

6. How long, and what's the plan if parts are late?

Good answer: an expected date on the estimate, updates as it moves, and a loaner or rental plan if the car's going to be here a while. Bad answer: a shrug. After a storm, ask specifically how many cars are ahead of yours.

7. Do you work for me or for my insurance company?

Ask it exactly that way. A DRP shop will say 'both,' and mean it. An independent will say 'you,' and the estimate will show it.

8. Can I see the car during the repair?

Good answer: of course, call ahead. Photos at teardown are standard at a good shop. A shop that doesn't want you in the back has a reason.

Our answers

Written estimate from your phone before you drive anywhere, three repair levels with every part labeled OEM, recycled or aftermarket, the owner's direct line, supplements handled by us, a written warranty on the warranty page, a date on every estimate with email updates at each stage, we work for you, and you're welcome in the shop. Ask us these questions anyway. We'd rather be chosen than defaulted to.

Your rights in Arizona

  1. You choose the shopIn Arizona the insurer can recommend a repair facility; it cannot require one or refuse to pay a covered claim because you went elsewhere.
  2. You're owed a proper repairThe policy pays to restore the car to pre-loss condition. Which parts and procedures that means is decided by the repair plan and the estimate, not by which shop is cheaper for the insurer.
  3. You can see the numbersAsk any shop for the itemized estimate and the supplement. Ask the insurer for the adjuster's estimate. They should match the car, not each other.
  4. Your deductible is the same anywhereGoing to a non-network shop does not raise your deductible. What changes is who advocates for you when the first number is low.

Best Deal is an independent, owner-run shop. We work with every insurer and belong to none of their networks; that is a choice, and this page explains why.

Common questions

Should I get three estimates?

You can get three in an afternoon from your phone now, so sure. Compare the parts list and the warranty, not just the total. The lowest total with 'aftermarket' on every line and no warranty isn't the cheapest repair.

Is a shop with hundreds of 5-star reviews automatically good?

Volume of reviews mostly tells you volume of cars. Read the recent two-star reviews instead; they tell you what happens when something goes wrong, which is the only time a shop's character shows.

What if I already dropped the car at the insurer's shop?

You can still move it, usually at no cost if work hasn't started. Call us first; we'll tell you honestly whether it's worth moving.

Does Best Deal pass its own test?

That's for you to decide, which is why the questions are here. Send photos, get the written estimate, and judge the answers.

Send a few photos. We'll take it from there.

Upload pictures of the damage for a preliminary price range, or call and talk to someone at the shop.
