Arizona · you choose the shop
Do I have to use the body shop my insurance company recommends?
No. In Arizona you pick the shop, and the insurer pays the covered repair either way. Here's what 'recommended shop' actually means, why the claims rep pushes it, and the one sentence that ends the conversation.
What the claims rep is really offering
When the adjuster says 'we have a preferred shop near you, we can set it up right now and guarantee the work,' you're being offered a Direct Repair Program shop: a facility that has a contract with your insurer. The shop agreed to the insurer's labor rate, parts preferences and repair guidelines, and to let the insurer audit its estimates, in exchange for a steady stream of referrals like you. The 'guarantee' is the insurer's, and it's real, but it guarantees the repair the insurer approved, which is the point.
What steering sounds like
'If you go somewhere else we can't guarantee the work.' 'Other shops may charge more than we'll pay and you'd owe the difference.' 'It'll take longer to get an adjuster out to a non-network shop.' Each of these is a sales line with a grain of truth. The guarantee is the DRP's selling point, not a condition of coverage. You can't be made to pay a difference on a covered repair done to a reasonable estimate; the shop sends a supplement and the insurer pays it. And the adjuster's schedule is the insurer's problem, not yours. Insurers in Arizona may recommend; they may not require, and they may not penalize you for choosing.
Why the push is so strong
DRP shops save the insurer money on every claim: lower agreed rates, more aftermarket and recycled parts where the guidelines allow, fewer supplements, faster closes. Multiply that by hundreds of thousands of claims and the incentive to route you there is enormous. None of that is illegal and some DRP shops do excellent work. But understand whose cost the arrangement is designed to control.
The sentence that ends it
'Thank you, I've chosen my own shop; it's Best Deal Auto Body in Glendale, here's the number.' That's all. The rep notes it, assigns an adjuster, and the claim proceeds. We send the insurer the estimate and photos, handle the supplement if their first number is low, and keep you out of the middle of it. You pay your deductible (and our deductible assistance covers up to $1,000 of it on qualifying repairs), same as you would at the network shop.
When a network shop is the right call
If you have no time, don't care which parts go on the car, and the damage is simple, a DRP shop will do a competent repair with minimal effort from you. If the car is newer, leased, or you want to know what's going on it, or you've been quoted a four-month wait after a storm, that's when choosing your own shop matters.
Your rights in Arizona
- You choose the shopIn Arizona the insurer can recommend a repair facility; it cannot require one or refuse to pay a covered claim because you went elsewhere.
- You're owed a proper repairThe policy pays to restore the car to pre-loss condition. Which parts and procedures that means is decided by the repair plan and the estimate, not by which shop is cheaper for the insurer.
- You can see the numbersAsk any shop for the itemized estimate and the supplement. Ask the insurer for the adjuster's estimate. They should match the car, not each other.
- Your deductible is the same anywhereGoing to a non-network shop does not raise your deductible. What changes is who advocates for you when the first number is low.
Best Deal is an independent, owner-run shop. We work with every insurer and belong to none of their networks; that is a choice, and this page explains why.

Can the insurer refuse to pay if I use my own shop?
No. A covered claim is paid at the reasonable cost of repair regardless of which shop does it. If the shop's estimate is higher than the adjuster's, the shop documents the difference and submits a supplement, which insurers pay routinely.
Will I have to pay the difference between the shop's price and what insurance pays?
Not on a covered repair done to a documented estimate. The difference is settled between the shop and the insurer through the supplement process. Where you can owe more is if you choose upgrades the policy doesn't cover, and we tell you that in writing before starting.
Does using my own shop slow down the claim?
Rarely, and not because of the shop. The insurer may take a day or two longer to assign an adjuster to a non-network shop. We start the estimate and photos the day the car arrives, so by the time the adjuster looks at it the work is done.
Is the insurer's 'lifetime guarantee' worth anything?
It's real: the insurer backs the DRP shop's repair for as long as you own the car. An independent shop's written warranty does the same thing from the shop's side. Ask for either one in writing; ours is on the warranty page.
