What hail damage repair costs in the Valley

Hail is priced by the panel: how many dents, how big, and whether the paint is cracked. Here is what you can expect to pay at a reputable body shop in the Phoenix area, and why the insurance check is usually bigger than you think.

How hail is priced

Every panel gets a dent count and a size (dime, nickel, quarter, half-dollar). A panel with 15 dime-size dents and no paint damage is a paintless dent repair job. A panel with 150 dents, or dents with cracked paint, or dents on a body line, gets conventional repair or replacement plus paint. The estimate is the sum of the panels, plus any glass, trim, mirrors or lights the storm broke.

Aluminum hoods and roofs (many trucks, some SUVs) cost more per dent than steel because aluminum doesn't move back the same way. Roof rails, sunroofs and antenna mounts limit how a tech can reach a dent, which adds time.

What you can expect to pay in the Valley

Light hail (a few dozen small dents, paint intact): $1,500 to $3,500. Mostly PDR, two to four days.

Moderate hail (a hundred or more dents across roof, hood and trunk): $3,500 to $7,500. PDR on most panels, maybe one panel conventional, five to ten days.

Severe hail (dents everywhere, cracked paint, broken glass or lights): $7,500 to $15,000 and up. Replacement panels, paint, glass; two to four weeks and parts availability matters.

These are ranges, not quotes. They're what a hail job at this level costs at a legitimate shop in the Phoenix area, using legitimate parts suppliers, in 2026. Your car's exact number comes from counting the dents.

When hail totals a car

Insurers total a car when the repair plus the salvage value crosses a set share of what the car is worth, roughly 65 to 75 percent in Arizona depending on the company. An older car with $9,000 of hail damage and a $12,000 value is close to that line. Newer cars rarely total from hail alone. If your car is near the line, ask about a repair that comes in under it; PDR-heavy repairs often do.

What you actually pay

Hail falls under comprehensive coverage, so you pay your comprehensive deductible (often $250 to $1,000) and the insurer pays the rest. Best Deal's deductible assistance covers up to $1,000 of it on qualifying repairs, so most hail customers pay nothing out of pocket. The deductible-assistance page has the details and the fine print.

How to photograph hail damage

  1. Shoot at an angle, not straight onHail dents disappear in a straight-on photo. Stand at the corner of the car and let the sky or a building reflect across the roof, hood and trunk; the dents show up as ripples in the reflection.
  2. One photo per panelRoof, hood, trunk, then each side. Four photos is plenty for a first number; we count exact dents when the car is here.
  3. Shade beats sunPark under a carport or in the shade. Direct sun washes out the dents.

A Best Deal estimator reviews every hail estimate personally before it goes out. Free, no obligation.

Common questions

Can I get a price from photos?

Yes, a close one. Send photos taken at an angle so the dents show in the reflection, one per panel, and you get a written range the same day. The exact number comes from counting dents when the car is here, which takes about an hour.

Will the insurance estimate match yours?

Insurance adjusters count the same dents we do, so the two usually land close. When they don't, we send the insurer our count with photos (a supplement) and they pay the difference. You are not stuck with the adjuster's first number.

Do I have to repair every panel?

No. Some people fix the hood and leave a lightly dented roof, especially on an older car. We'll price it either way. If insurance paid for all of it, keep in mind the unrepaired damage comes off a future claim.

Is cheap hail repair from a tent in a parking lot a good idea?

Usually not. Storm-chasing PDR crews follow the hail from state to state. Some are skilled, but there's no shop to go back to if a dent cracks the paint or a headliner comes loose, and your insurer may not pay their invoice. Read the what-to-do page before you sign anything in a parking lot.

Send a few photos. We'll take it from there.
